Brain Cancer
Brain tumors are a mass of tissue caused by a buildup of excess cells. Unlike most tumors, brain tumors are dangerous even when benign because they can compress normal brain tissues. Malignant brain tumors are called brain cancer. Brain cancer tends to grow rapidly and can spread to other parts of the brain and spinal cord.
Brain Cancer Treatment Options
Brain cancer treatment options are determined by the type and stage of brain cancer and include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. A combination of these therapies can also be used. Typically the tumor will be surgically removed followed by radiation and/or chemotherapy. In some cases, chemotherapy may be given in the form of several dime-sized wafers that are placed directly into the brain during surgery. The wafers dissolve over time to disburse the chemotherapy drugs.
