Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is a cancer that forms in the tissues of the breast.  Although it occurs in both males and females, cases in males are rare.  In the United States alone, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  Tumors usually begin in the ducts or lobules of the breast and if left untreated can spread to other parts of the body (metastasize).  While breast cancer results from a genetic abnormality, the growth of tumors is not always due to inheritance.  Approximately 10 percent of breast cancer cases are “inherited” from one’s parents and the other 90 percent are a result of the aging process and other factors.

Breast Cancer Treatment Options
Breast cancer treatment options are determined by a cancer’s particular stage and development.  Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy.  In most cases, surgery is the first stage of treatment (lumpectomy, mastectomy or lymph node removal).  Surgeries are often followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy treatments to destroy any remaining cancer cells post operation.
