Colorectal Cancer
Colon cancer is a cancer that forms in the tissues of the colon. Rectal cancer forms in the tissues of the rectum. They are often categorized together as colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer type found in the United States. Colorectal cancer can sometimes spread from the colon or rectum to nearby lymph nodes as well as to other organs, most commonly the liver. Risk factors for colorectal cancer include being 50 years of age or older, a high fat diet, having a condition that causes inflammation of the colon, a history of cigarette smoking, a history of colorectal polyps and a family history of colorectal cancer. Certain genetic alterations are also considered risk factors for colorectal cancer.
Colorectal Cancer Treatment Options
Treatment options for colorectal cancer may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or biological therapy. Surgery is the most common cancer treatment option for colorectal cancer and can be paired with both radiation therapy and chemotherapy or with chemotherapy alone. Biological therapy is also used for those with advanced stage colorectal cancer.
