Gastric Cancer
Gastric cancer, also referred to as stomach cancer, is a cancer that forms in the tissues that line the stomach. Gastric cancer can spread to neighboring organs as well as through the blood to the liver, lungs and other organs. Gastric cancer can also spread through the lymphatic system. Risk factors for stomach cancer include, but are not limited to, being of age 72 or older, a history of smoking, a family history of stomach cancer, a history of eating smoked, salted or pickled foods, h. pylori infection and other health problems that cause stomach inflammation.
Gastric Cancer Treatment Options
Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are all treatment options for gastric cancer. They are sometimes used in combination for optimal results. Surgery is the most common treatment for stomach cancer and can consist of a partial or total gastrectomy. Chemotherapy can also be used after surgery to kill any remaining cancerous cells. Sometimes both chemotherapy and radiation are used together when treating gastric cancer.
