Head and Neck Cancers
Head and neck cancers occur in the head or neck area. This includes cancers in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, salivary glands, mouth, throat or larynx. The squamous cells lining the mucosal surfaces on the head and neck are the origin for most head and neck cancers. In the United States, approximately 3 to 5 percent of all cancers are head and neck cancers. Risk factors for head and neck cancer include tobacco and alcohol use.
Head and Neck Cancer Treatment Options
Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are all treatment options for head and neck cancer. These cancer treatment options are determined by the tumor location, stage, the patient’s age and the patient’s condition. Surgery is a common treatment choice for head and neck cancer and is often followed by radiation therapy. Chemotherapy is also found to be an effective treatment method. Biological therapies, when used both alone and in combination with chemotherapy and radiation are currently being studied.
