Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer
Lung cancer forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining air passages. The two main types of lung cancer are small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.  About 13 percent of lung cancer cases are small cell lung cancers, which spread quickly and are almost exclusively linked with smoking or second hand smoke.  Most of the remaining lung cancer diagnoses (about 87 percent) are non-small cell lung cancers.  This type tends to spread more slowly and is caused by a variety of risk factors which also include smoking and second hand smoke.

Lung Cancer Treatment Options
Lung cancer treatment options are determined by the type and stage of lung cancer, and include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and targeted biological therapies.  People with non-small cell lung cancer may receive a combination of these lung cancer treatments, and the cancer treatment choices are different for each stage of the disease.  Some of those with more advanced lung cancer are given targeted therapy. When receiving surgery, research shows that survival for all patients with early stage, non-small cell lung cancer improved by following the surgery with chemotherapy.   Chemotherapy alone or combined with radiation and/or surgery is also the usual treatment choice for small cell lung cancer. This cancer treatment plan results in a large percentage of patients experiencing remission.
