Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is a growth of abnormal malignant cells that begin in a woman’s ovaries.  There are different kinds of ovarian cancer, which are primarily named for the type of cells the tumor originated from.  The main types are germ cell tumors, stromal tumors and epithelial tumors.   Epithelial tumors are the most common; typically, when someone says they have ovarian cancer they are referring to epithelial tumors.  The exact cause of ovarian cancer is unknown, but possible risk factors include age, obesity, the use of fertility drugs and family history.

Ovarian Cancer Treatment Options
Ovarian cancer treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  Sometimes a patient will receive a combination of these cancer treatments. Typically, ovarian cancer responds well to chemotherapy treatment.  The patient’s treatment will depend on disease stage, the histologic cell type, patient age and their overall condition.
