Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of the pancreas. There are two types of pancreatic tumors, exocrine and endocrine. Exocrine tumors are more common and often cancerous. Pancreatic cancer tends to spread rapidly and is usually not detected in its early stages because of a late onset of symptoms. The exact cause of pancreatic cancer is unknown, but there are certain risk factors including smoking, diet, diabetes and family history.
Pancreatic Cancer Treatment Options
Treatment options are determined by the type and stage of pancreatic cancer and include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Sometimes a combination of these cancer treatments will be utilized. Because pancreatic cancer spreads quickly and is not easily detected in its early stages, surgical removal is not always possible. This leaves patients to rely primarily on radiation and chemotherapy.
