Penile Cancer

Penile Cancer
Penile cancer is a rare cancer that forms in the penis.  Each of the tissues in the penis contains several types of cells which can develop different kinds of cancer.  These differences determine how serious the disease is and what type of treatment is needed.  About 95 percent of penile cancers develop from squamous cells.  This type of cancer can develop anywhere on the penis, but most are found on the foreskin or in the glands.  These tumors can typically be cured if found early.

Penile Cancer Treatment Options
Penile cancer treatment options are determined by the type and stage of penile cancer and include surgery, immune therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.  Surgery is the main method of treatment for penile cancer.  Chemotherapy may be used if the cancer has spread.  Chemotherapy may be topical or systematic.  Topical chemotherapy is applied directly to the skin rather than being injected or given by mouth.   This type of chemotherapy can reach cancer cells near the skins surface, but cannot reach cancer cells more deeply in the skin.  Systematic chemotherapy is injected into a vein or given by mouth.  It is used when the cancer has spread to lymph nodes or to other organs. Sometimes an oncologist will prescribe a combination of treatments.
