Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer forms in the tissues of the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Prostate cancer usually occurs in older men. There are several cell types in the prostate, but nearly all prostate cancers start in the gland cells. This kind of cancer is known as adenocarcinoma. Some doctors believe that prostate cancer begins with very small changes in the size and shape of the prostate gland cells. Nearly half of all men have these changes by the time they reach 50.
Prostate Cancer Treatment Options
Prostate cancer treatment options are determined by the type and stage of prostate cancer and include surgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. If the cancer has spread outside of the prostate gland and hormone therapy is not working, typically chemotherapy will be used to slow cancer growth and reduce symptoms. Studies are currently being conducted to determine the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment given soon after surgery.
